I often have the passing thought “What if God had made me a person born in the slums of Dehli India”.  I have been to Dehli.  It is different than any place I have been.  Abject poverty….makes Mexico City look very prosperous.  It should get you attention.  But by God’s grace, I would be there, not on this marvelous ranch, living a life that is fairy tale.  Sure, I work hard, my hands are scarred, and I go to be exhausted….but, this life is an honor to live.  Being a cow/calf operator is a perilous business.  Financially on the edge most of the time, any extra money goes into the operation to better it.  Long hours, often times when I am ready to quit.  Calving at 4 am in a blinding snowstorm.  But in the end, I would not trade it for anything.  I love living in this rural place.  I love caring for the cattle, I LOVE being a part of life and death actions/decisions!  “City” folk don’t get it….I can’t expect them to.  But if you have ever seen two young calves butting heads, while your herd grazes in a field of lush wheat, with a burning orange sunset in the background, you will get it….and you will think “this must be how peaceful heaven is”!
